When a group of prominent Newburyport residents formed the Phoenix Marine & Fire Insurance Society in 1809 they dedicated the Phoenix Building as the society’s home. But in 1811, a devastating fire claimed 250 buildings and 16 acres, including most of Newburyport’s center including the Phoenix Building. But true to its name, the Phoenix Building rose from the ashes and was one of the first structures to be rebuilt and was rededicated just six months after the fire.
Today, the Phoenix Building remains a key architectural and historical landmark in the downtown area where it serves as a center for Newburyport business and social activities.
…A Wonderful Presence
The Phoenix Room, which graces the entire third floor of the building, recently underwent a full restoration. The ballroom has been returned to its original Federal-style grandeur and features a magnificent brass chandelier, working original fireplaces, hardwood floors, and thirteen six-foot-high windows that offer fantastic views of historic Newburyport. The room also offers an abundance of natural light and is capped with a high arched ceiling.
With its charming and warm décor the Phoenix Room has long been considered one of Newburyport’s hot spots for small groups and special occasions.
